It was a mild morning but with the promise of some drizzly rain to dampen the spirits somewhat on our return to the Finchley 20 for the longest distance run in this year’s Grand Prix. The event was used by many from the Club to prepare both the legs and the mind for the upcoming marathons being attempted next month.
Jason Blair led the men home in and impressive time of 2:13:12 (6:40 min/mile) to claim his first Grand Prix win in both the Men’s past the post and age graded competition. This puts Jason on track for potentially going sub 3 hours in his upcoming Boston marathon. Joe Chang quietly did the business of collecting 19 points to take him to the top of the overall men’s past the post competition and into third place for the age graded table. Next man home was the in-form Ed Brunskill, who continues to improve his running with each run. This was a day after he ran 19:24 for his hundredth Parkrun at Bushy on Saturday. Well done Ed. I know Kevin Parker was disappointed with his time of 2:32:05 was not a pb, but it still bodes well for a good time and potential PB at the Marathon in Brighton (which is 3:29:17). Stephen Blakeney ran a good consistent and evenly paced run and should also do well at his first marathon next month.
I had a pleasant run around and was kept company by Richard Goulder who ran a nice even pace and was pleased that he beat his expectations by running an average 7:50 min/mile. Well done Richard. Special mention to both Kevin Stone and Kevin Furlong who both dug in when the going got tough on that final lap to complete the distance. Well done Guys.
Katherine Wilson stormed the course for the Ladies coming home first for the ladies in a time of 2:23:20 (7:09 min/mile) while the irreplaceable Ann Bath took nearly two minutes off 2008 Finchley time to finish with a massive age graded result of 78.59%, which was by far the highest age grading for anyone from the club yesterday. I understand that Laura Roberts struggled with her fuelling strategy, and so her time was not as she had hoped for but did well to continue on despite this and to run 2:51:19 (8:34 min/mile pace). Hopefully, the fuelling challenge can be sorted by the big day next month and it will all go well on the day. Zoe Wingfield and Sarah Pettefer also ran well.
With Aimee being out of action yesterday, Zoe Ashcroft stretched her lead in the Ladies past the post and still leads the Age Graded competition, but with a run in hand Ann has Zoe in her sights. Sarah Pettefer is now in joint third place in the past the post and fourth in the age graded. Well done Sarah.
Once again, thanks goes to Ann for providing such wonderful post race victuals and John Matthews for his support and encouragement.
I hope everyone enjoyed the run and that it was good preparation for your up coming marathons.
The next event is the re-scheduled Horton 10k on 27th March 201
Tables for the Finchley 20 and the cumulative positions are set out below.
