Harry Hawks 10. Grand Prix 4. 30th June 2013.
**Updated Grand Prix standings now available in the downloads section (Libby) **
At last summer has arrived and we could enjoy the English idyll of a village green complete with cricket and sunshine. But not for us relaxing and lounging, we had racing to do!
Who could not relish the prospect of a duel between Peter Tozer and Derick Wilkie? Peter said that he had lost a lot of blood in a shaving accident that morning and he did look like he had been a victim of botched cosmetic surgery, however he was “confident”. Derick said that his full head of hair would be a disadvantage in the heat.
Our triathletes, whilst looking as fit as butcher’s dogs, generally complained of lack of tapering. Kevin Parker said he had ITB, Hamstring and Achilles, which I think is the complete set. Katherine Wilson said she had not recovered from “that stupid Half Iron Man”, which is not an event I’ve heard of, but I think I could do well at. Julie Chasin said she was too busy cycling these days and had an ITB but hoped for a time under 90 mins. Mustafa Fawzy said he was looking forward to a low pressure run but would have David Pimm in his sights.
David was focusing mostly on the age graded competition and hoped for 67 minutes on a flat but sometimes uneven course. His main rival Danny Norman was recovering from a back injury so keeping low key, and Steve Ramek who was feeling on top form and hoping to better his PB of 68 minutes. Steve expected David to set off quickly so he would try to catch him in the later stages.
Fellow back sufferer Kevin Furlong thought it could go either way; a good chance of an 85 minute PB, or otherwise pear shaped. Lower back victim Karen Hardy was quite confident as was Joe Chang despite being a teeny bit short of sleep. Richard and Vicki Kirk were in two minds about if they were going to race over family bragging rights, and were jaded from a party the previous night. Zoe Ashcroft and Mike Gray did not want to put themselves under pressure because they had not been running much recently, Sarah Pettifer just wanted to finish and Maria Cenalmor wanted to do her best and enjoy the run.
Amy Tomlins was looking forward to her first 10 miler for 4 years. Libby Marchant had plantilar flatlulitis, which I’m not sure but I think is farting feet, and David Pearce and Graham Ashby had calf injuries, although what immature cattle has to do with running I don’t know. John Sweeney had been drinking too much during a work trip and Alestair Reisner thought his bent safety pin would affect his performance. John Reardon thought he had drunk way, way too much beetroot juice the night before. Fiona McDonnell was treating the race as a comeback from being poorly and Michael Lill and Jill Hogge were unavailable for comment, or at least, I missed bumping into them until after the race. Ollie Webb said he had a really good curry the night before which must have been a comfort to him to reminisce upon during the race.
Kevin Stone said he had made the schoolboy error of wearing racing flats more suitable for shorter distances, but failed to mention the small matter of doing 65 miles a few weeks ago. Fellow ultra runner Anne Bath was tickled by how short the race was and Richard Goulder was recovering from his ongoing attempt to set foot in every square meter of our beautiful country the previous day.
Please inspect the results below to see how this bunch of near cripples and hypercondriacs got on and I’d like to thank John Reardon for a ding dong battle which lasted for the last 6 miles. Bit like Formula One, there were no actual overtakes, but a long, drawn out procession to the inevitable. At least we had no blow outs.
