A somewhat remarkable Handicap Race took place this month. So good were the conditions that, of the 29 runners, 24 finished under the target clock time of 35mins, and the remaining 5 within the next 50secs. This resulted in there being 10 PB runs and 7SBs.
1st home was Richard Kirk from Jo Newstead (2nd), improving her SB by 31secs, and Rachel Thompson (3rd) with a PB time of 22:08, a 54sec improvement. Maria Frawley (9th) took 68secs off her PB and Alex Coakley (11th) 40secs from his. Michael Street (14th) reduced his PB by 36secs and, most significantly, Libby Marchant (16th), in beating her PB by 24secs, moves up from 11th to 7th in the Top 15 list, with a time of 19:23. There were also PBs for Victoria Kirk (4th), Mark Harrap (15th), Katherine Franklin (18th), Moustafa Fawzy (19th) in his first run of the season, and Steve Ramek (21st).
Some of you may be curious to know how Chris Coghlan finished in 26th position! Well, Chris was chatting away in the changing room, thinking he had plenty of time to get to his start, when he suddenly realised that he had left his running shoes at work. Mounting his bike and despite being informed by Don Esslemont, on marshal duty at the Club entrance, that the first runner had already passed him, determined to make the dash to Kingston to retrieve his footwear. He was able to start at 20mins on the clock, with his elapsed time added to his proper start time to give him the finishing position. Such effort to compete should be rewarded, I hope you will agree.
Some anxiety as to how the finish recording would pan out, though, as there were only three of us to do it. But, thanks to the calmness and expertise of helpers Kate Hancock and Don Esslemont, everything was OK.
