With Spring just around the corner thoughts for many turn to the lighter evenings and competing over shorter distances including: the 5k Grand Prix event on 27 Feb, the last few handicap races of the current season and, of course, the Club Mile on 1 June. With this in mind, our track session next Wednesday will sharpen things up a little with eight 400m reps at a faster pace (a little faster than your target mile pace) with recovery between each. This is core training for middle distance running, helps acclimatise your body to this faster pace and builds your ability to judge the right pace over the shorter events.
This is for all standards of runners, involving groups running at differing speeds. Running short, faster intervals in a speed session is an important part of our overall physical and psychological training programme, building endurance and speed.
For those training for a Spring Marathon, there will be a separate group running 4x1200m, if there are enough takers.
We meet at the Kingsmeadow track, Kingston Road. Please arrive by about 7.15pm to complete a gentle warm up (eg two or three times jogging around the track) before we begin the formal warm-up promptly at 7.30pm. Not warming up properly before the exhilaration of a speed session is a sure-fire way to give yourself an injury! Entry is £3.40.
Do bring warm clothing for before and after and perhaps waterproofing.
