Despite our club name, to become a member you do not need to be able to run the 26.2 miles of a marathon. Our members race across many different distances up to and including marathons. Some like to take it one step further and go for ultras. Running distances over a marathon these runners always inspire us. Two recent ultra achievements were made by members Ann Bath and Dennis Brandrick.
First off, Ann competed in the Open race at European 24 hour Championship at Albi, France over the weekend of 22nd/23rd October. This event consists of multiple laps of a 1.1km circuit. Ann ran a huge 112.3 miles (180.8km) in 24 hours. This came only 5 weeks after her record breaking performance at Tooting’s 24 hour track event and she only ran 3.7 miles less than her record. A highlight for Ann was being able to share the course with the silver medal winning GB men’s team and to witness Dan Lawson win with 162.7 miles.
Dennis competed in Jedburgh Three Peaks Ultra on 29th October. He completed the 38 mile trail race in 9:07:48. He describes it as by far the toughest but most enjoyable race he has ever done. There is a good reason for this as the race included over 3100ft of climbing. Someone should really let Dennis know there are races nearer to home than Scotland. As an ever present at Edinburgh marathon and having also competed in Glasgow marathon this year, Dennis can’t resist a trip north of the border.
Well done to both members for achieving these ultra impressive feats.
