Our awards dinner dance is on May 12th (it’s a great night out if you haven’t already bought tickets!) and all the trophies need to be engraved. So if you are lucky enough to have one please bring it to the club (I won’t be there Easter Monday) or contact me and I’ll arrange to collect it. Also, there are Marathon awards for Senior Male. M40 and M50, Senior Female, W35 and W45, so please let me know of any marathons run since May 2011, any run this April will also be taken into account. You don’t need to run in your club vest for these awards. I’ll be looking on the Power of 10 web site and although it usually includes Marathons run abroad it may miss some.
With the sunset tomorrow due at 1940, the Handicap will be run in daylight of some sort, very much dependent on whether we have cloudy or clear skies. The forecast suggests there will be sunshine and showers but, hardy types that you are, I’m sure there will be a good turnout for the penultimate race of the season.
The Whole Foods Kingston Market Breakfast Run (with two options – 8 or 16 miles) is an event that many runners seem to shun on the grounds that the entry fee is punching £30. Maybe because of this, because it was Reading Half Marathon on the same day, or because it all kicked off at 8am, there were just four 26.2ers in yesterday’s field; Sue Garnish, Simon Dew, Gerald Abrahams and myself, all getting stuck in with the longer distance with the exception of Gerald.
This was the second year I have done the Barcelona Marathon and I would certainly go back again.
This year the race was slightly later in the month which meant it fell on the weekend the clocks went back. Barcelona can be a bit warm this time of year so the race kicks off at 8:30! Thankfully we weren’t staying too far from the start, but leaving the room at 6:45 still meant it was dark outside and we passed a number of more than tipsy clubbers on their way home, they looked confused seeing people in shorts and vests walking towards the start!!
On beautiful warm and sunny Sunday morning no less then 16 club members rocked up at Cranleigh to take on the 3 lap 21 mile course. With all running either Brighton or London next month this was the last chance to get some good distance training in a race environment before the big day. Spirits and confidence seemed high at the start that was to be shared with a cycling event that was taking place that same morning. As a result the road was closed to traffic for the first 2 miles as we all set off with bikes weaving alongside.
Now that I have qualified as a nutritional therapist I have started running weight loss classes. Would anyone like to join a class or have a friend who might like to join? I have places for the next two courses starting on Thursday 19th April and Tuesday 24th April, respectively. Classes are held fortnightly from 7-9 pm.
The classes consist of a 12-week programme run in small groups so that everyone gets support and encouragement from each other. The programme aims to teach healthy eating and lifestyle habits that helps you to lose weight naturally and keep it off! As well as nutritional help we focus on setting realistic goals and keeping motivated.
Due to SRFC’s Director not wanting to have the renual forms on our notice-board I have put application forms in a large white envelope marked 26.2 in the club foyer uner “A” where letters are left to be collected. (Some also in their office) Pay or renue by 15th April and pay £57 a year (just over £1 a week), to use showers / sauna / bar 7 days a week. The bar is subsidised so beers and soft drinks are generally about 50p or more cheaper than normal (wine about £1 cheaper) which means having a few drinks a week may even make you a profit while you socialise after running. Also they let us use their kitchen to re-heat / cook food to eat in the bar, or you can have take-aways delivered too.
Don’t miss your opportunity to get tickets to THE event of the year, that’s right, it is that time of year again…….The 2012 26.2RRC Awards Dinner and Dance is being held on Saturday 12th May at the Holiday Inn, Portsmouth Road, Surbiton. It’s a fun night out with friends and clubmates in a great venue with fantastic food and this year we have managed to confirm Radio Jackie star Neil Long as our DJ for the evening, and as if that wasn’t enough, you might even win an award.
So don’t delay, confirm your place today! The booking form can be found in the download section of the site, or there are hard copies at the club, or email us at 26.2membership@gmail.com and we’ll email you a form directly. Tickets are £30 and this can be paid by cheque (either posted to Peter whose address is on the booking form, or handed to a committee member), or make an online transfer (email us and we can give you the bank details). Look forward to seeing you all there!
Renewals to existing members have gone out but they haven’t deducted the extra £10, so should read £77 less 26.2 £10 discount less £10 prompt payment discount (by 15th April) = £57! For others wanting to use the bar and showers/sauna 7 days a week please get a form from the office in the foyer (if locked see someone in the bar). I also have them in my locker but am away now till April 1st. They don’t want us to put the forms on our notice board (don’t understand why!) So for those not members do consider joining, only just over £1 a week and enjoy a post run social drink with us on Wednesdays, and there are always members around on Sunday lunchtimes too. Please note it’s not fair on those that pay the Social membership for those that haven’t to use the bar!
Where Saturday was windy and wet, Sunday dawned sunny and bright for the longest race on the Grand Prix schedule. The race starts at Dunsfold Aerodrome, allowing petrol heads to try to work out which corner is which on the Top Gear test track. It also allows for a hugely exposed first few miles, and though we were lucky with the weather the beginning of the 10mile loop was into a headwind both times.
