Barcelona Marathon

Brilliant running
by Luke in Barcelona

Luke McDonagh has recorded what must be the fastest time by a 26.2 member for some considerable time with 2hrs 50mins in the Barcelona Marathon, run under clear skies today, 6th March.

Unfortunately, Julie, our other runner, had to drop out when she fainted after getting as far as 25 miles. She was taken to hospital and, although detained overnight, was able to text Alice, who was a spectator at the event, that she was suffering nothing worse than dehydration.

Grand Prix Schedule for 2011/12

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the recent discussions.

The month of May includes our 30th Annual Awards Dinner and Dance on Saturday 7th May and is being held at the Holiday Inn on Portsmouth Road.  Details will be advised by the Committee shortly.  Also, the Green Belt Relay is a couple of weeks later which is another fabulous and popoular event that the Club attends and competes at.

Therefore, in order to avoid too much congestion, May will be a rest month for the Grand Prix and the season will kick off in ernest with the Mile Championship at Kingsmeadow on Wednesday 1st June 2011, shortly followed by the Dorking 10 on Sunday 5th June 2011.

Club Handicap Result – March 2011

No sooner do I include, in my preview, the Men and Ladies top10 Handicap Times when along comes Jack Holland to better his PB by just under a minute and become the sixth fastest of all time.

Jack was one of nine runners who ran PBs in a rather disappointing field of 27 starters that included 5 first timers. There were satisfying SBs for Peter Grecian and Neil Sunderland by 56 and 55 secs. respectively.

Race winner Lizzie Ruth Wilson was also previewed as getting back to her pre-Christmas form and so it proved. Her time of 30:00 was only 1 sec. off her SB set in August 2010. First timer Jane Calderbank was fastest lady in 21:40

March Club Handicap Preview

Still another month to go before we get a daylight run but, with the weather set fair for this evening, albeit a little chilly, early registrees should be able to spot a flypast of the International Space Station, starting at 18.47 and lasting about 3 mins.

Has the handicapper caught up with points leader Andrea Bennett? She will need another good run to prevent Kevin Stone from narrowing the gap, and you never know quite what sort of a run you will get from third placed Howard Brinkworth.

Lizzie Wilson in fourth is getting back to her pre-Christmas form but, with Jon away and Dave ‘hors de combat’ at present, she doesn’t have the same family rivalry as the Tozers, Pete and Alice, who are tied sixth, or the Esslemonts, Sue and Don, who are separated by 6 points in 11th and 12th=, respectively.

Here is a list of the fastest times, to date, for the top 10 Men & Ladies. See you all this evening.
