Running around a muddy field on a cold January day in a grotty part of west London is not everyone’s choice of spending a Saturday afternoon but 25 members of 26.2 thought otherwise. It was a fantastic turnout and great performances all round resulted in another convincing win for the club. I have posted the full results in the downloads section – which you should also be able to access by clicking here. Continue reading Men’s Cross Country Cranford Park

V10K 2013 – Your Help Needed
With February 17th drawing ever closer it’s time for the club to make a concerted effort to attract as much interest in our annual club race as we possibly can. So far we have handed out entry forms at a number of events but with a few weeks left before online entries close the more events we can hit the more chance we have of increasing numbers on the day. The V10K can, if well attended bring some much needed cash into the club so it is in everyones interests to help swell the numbers as much as we can. With this in mind we would really appreciate it if anyone attending a Parkrun or any other event make the effort to distribute some flyers either before or after the event. It doesn’t matter if we hit the same Parkrun more then once, and with so many local Parkruns around the immediate area they are ideal events to target in the run up to February. It’s not just running events that we can target but any other local sporting events where those participating may fancy a 10K, also any clubs or sports centres you may attend would be ideal.
Ladies Cross Country Sat Jan 12th at Noon
Our 3rd match is at Mitcham Common at 12 noon, 8k, HQ The Eco Centre Windmill Road CR4 1HT where there is only a tiny 20 space car park, and no parking at the Harvester next door. The local roads north of the Common don’t have yellow lines but when I went there last Sat most spaces were taken up by residents.
Suggest travel by train from Surbiton or Berrylands to Wimbledon then get the Tram to Beddington Lane, about 15 minutes, get Travel Card (not Zone 1)
Suggest getting 9.57 or 10.12 or 10.27 from Surbiton (8 mins to SW19) or from Berrylands at 04 and 34 past the hour and takes 10 mins, then Tram to Beddington Lane, then about a 1/2 mile walk to HQ, look up map on www.goo.gl/maps/veLQH .
Clapham Chasers say the wearing of spikes is advised although some sections of stoney paths, & could well be muddy. Toilets at HQ but no changing facilities. Everyone welcome and please ring or text me if this is your first one! Also, everyone welcome to meet at the New Prince 6.30pm with a curry later – joint meet with the men post Cross Country.

January 2013 – Club Handicap Result
It was ladies night at the Club Handicap last evening with 6 of the 9 ladies running, in a field of 28, finishing in the top 12. 1st home, and coming back to form, was Sue Garnish, 12 secs ahead of Caroline Dawson who, with a time of 23:56, smashed her PB by 41 secs.
First man home, 10 secs behind in 3rd, was Ben Downe whose SB time of 19:16 was only 6 secs short of his PB. He was 3 secs ahead of Julie Rickard with Danny Norman a further 3 secs behind, both beating their PBs by 14 and 13 secs respectively. Danny’s time of 16:12 still keeps him in 4th position in the ‘All Time’ list.
Contest of the evening undoubtedly belonged to the ‘Three Amigos’, Libby Marchant, Kevin Stone and Rick Emery. Starting together, they finished within 7 secs of each other with Libby taking the honours in a PB time of 21:13, 6 secs ahead of Kevin Stone who also ran a PB, pipping Rick by 1 sec.
A very pleasant evening for running and my thanks go to Derick Wilkie, Andrea Bennett and Richard Goulder without whose help it might have been somewhat different.
January 2013 – Club Handicap Preview
No sooner are we into the New Year than it’s Handicap time, again. Six races completed and it’s tight at the top of the League Table. With leader James Thurston not competing in the December event, Rosie Gerrard, on 132 points, moves to within 4 points of him. Kevin Stone is up to 3rd, 5 points back, and David Pearce drops down to 4th on 121. Jon Kinsey moves from 7th to 5th on 106, just 1 point ahead of Javier Fuentes. Richard Kirk’s winning run moves him from 23rd to 9th equals with Daniel Harris and Steve Watkins, all on 81 points. The full League Table is attached along with December’s Race Analysis.
Happy New Year to you all and see you on Wednesday, whether running or helping.
New Years Running
As Surbiton Racket and Fitness Club is closed on New Year’s Eve, and I’m sure everyone has more fun things planned than going for a run, there will be no Monday night club run on 31st December. The next organised club run will be on Wednesday 2nd January 2013 which will be the club handicap race.
For those who want to do a local Parkrun on New Years Day, both Bushy and Kingston Parkruns are on. Bushy starts at 9am and Kingston starts at 10am. Note that the Hawker Centre is closed on New Years Day, so there will be no parking available in their car park and the coffee bar won’t be open. If you’re planning on driving to Kingston Parkrun then avoid the roads next to the river when parking as some have been flooded over Christmas,
No Christmas Runs – A Few Beers Instead
Due to lack of response to a run this evening the next club run will be on Wednesday 2nd January unless of course some of you want arrange something between yourselves through the forums. A number of us will however be meeting for a few Christmas drinks this evening in Surbiton if anyone would like to join us. We will be meeting in the Victoria for 8pm which will no doubt be much nicer then running around Surbiton in the miserable weather we appear to be getting today.
Marathon Ballot Results
Thank you to all those that came to the Marathon Ballot and Christmas Social; it was great to see you all.
The three London Marathon place were awarded to (in the order they were drawn): Greg Whiteman, Kevin Parker and Kevin Stone.
Note that the number of qualifying events for next year’s draw has increased to eight events. A list of qualifying events and the rules can be found here.
