Club Handicap 2018/19 Preview

The new club handicap season starts this evening (Wednesday 1st August). Who can challenge last season’s champion Lizzie Wilson?

For those of you new to this event, the monthly race starts towards the bottom end of the Byeways and sets out towards the Roystons before taking a left-hand turn. Each runner will complete 2 laps of the Berrylands loop before turning back up the Byeways and finishing around 30 meters short of the Crest at the top of the road.

Please ensure you arrive at the club promptly at 7pm to allow everyone time to register by 7:20 latest and the first runners are ready at the Byeways for a 7:30 start. Please note that turning up late to register on the start line does cause problems so if you are running late and want to take part please do message us to let us know.

We look forward to seeing a good turnout for this season first handicap and ask that anyone not able to run to come along to help out as the event cannot take place without volunteers. If you are coming along tonight to run your first ever club handicap, all you need to know is your current 5K time so we can give you a first start time. For those wanting to know more about how the handicap works please see the handicap page -> here <-

August Handicap Preview

July’s Handicap saw 42 of us starting and finishing in the Byeways as we ran the new course for the first time. In essence only the start and finish has changed although this means the incline along Berrylands if dealt with much earlier and the finish is slightly more downhill. In addition to the course change we are happy to report that the 3 mile handicap course is now 3 miles and not the 2.97 miles most people seemed to measure over the past years.

Among the 42 runners we had:

  • 8 First timers
  • 4 personal bests for those having run before
  • 4 runners sub 20
  • No single runner taking longer to complete the course then the new base time of 40 minutes

First timers Daniel Clarke and Jackie Morris lead the field home with Lizzie Wilson hot on their tails as she bids to repeat her amazing form of 2010/11 season when she took glory and won the season by a clear margin.

For full details on last months times, positions and this months start times see the full handicap database for this season –> here <-

For those of you attending tomorrow evening we would ask that:

  • Please arrive in good time to register as we will be leaving the club at 7:15pm prompt in order to start at 7:30pm.
  • If you are running late message either Kevin Stone or Steve Ramek in advance to register yourself, please do not arrive at the Byeways to register if you can help it.
  • Be mindful of the residents whose road we are now using to start and finish on, it must have been a bit of a shock to us all there last month.
  • Please keep noise to a minimum and move towards the end of the road when you finish to register your position away from the finish line.
  • If you are unable to run but can help out please make yourself known and we will ensure you are given a Hi-Vis and a assigned a role.

And finally for those of you who are unsure if you would be able to compete in the handicap we have changed the base start time to 40 minutes from 35 to make sure everyone can get round in the allotted time so please do come along and give it a try, you won’t regret it.

April Handicap Preview

With only 2 handicaps left for the 2016/17 season it is still tight at the top with Alan Harding 2nd place having gained 6 points on Mark Canning 1st place after the March Battle Royale which saw Mark slowing up with a minor injury. Ed Rowlands sits 6 points Alan in 3rd place meaning this months installment should be an interesting race.

March saw 4 first timers run the course with Gemma Burt, Ross Cameron and Freddie Constable crossing the finish line within a minute of each other in 1st, 2nd & 3rd position. Zero2Hero graduate Kristen Edwards was also a first timer starting with a slightly more realistic handicap time and finishing in 22nd place. There were 7 other PB’s and a total of 25 runners took part.

If anyone is able to help out this Wednesday evening please drop me an email or let me know at the club this evening so I can pop you on the list. If you are running please ensure you are wearing Hi-Vis and/or running lights. Please note we will be closing registration in the club at 7:15 to aim for a 7:30 start.

March Handicap Preview

This Wednesday evening is Handicap time once again and the competition is certainly heating up but while it might appear to be a 2 horse race at the moment nothing is certain as we head into the home straight with only 3 Handicaps left to go.

So as things stand Mark Canning is leading the charge with Alan Harding hot on his heals with only 9 points separating them.  Ed Rowlands is sitting in third place on 178 points and John Reardon having missed last month due to illness is 4th on 171.

We had 28 runners last month with 5 of those being first timers. Of those who have run before we had 12 seasons bests of which 7 were personal bests.

Club Handicap – It’s Tight at the Top

This weeks handicap is looking to be an interesting evening with only 11 points separating the top 3 there is everything to play for as the season is starting to draw to a close.

Mark Canning is currently in pole position with Alan Harding and John Reardon close behind. With only 30 seconds separating them on this weeks starting times expect there to be a good battle for placings as seasons best times are no doubt going to be harder to obtain as the season progresses.

If anyone is able to help out this Wednesday evening please drop me an email or let me know at the club this evening so I can pop you on the list. Also some concerns have been voiced about the way runners loiter in the road area after the run so can we please ask everyone to be extra careful crossing the road and make sure you remain n the pavement whilst you recover as we would hate to see someone involved in an incident with a passing car. Trying to finish on the pavement is also helpful but please do clear the finish as soon as you can. Please note we will be closing registration in the club at 7:15 to aim for a 7:30 start.

Handicap Amendments

As some of you will be aware there have been some odd handicap start times given out over the past few months that have affected peoples overall position in the points table which then continues to affect those runners for the next few runs.

Due to a few people questioning their start times and the affect they believed it had on their handicap  positional points and subsequent start times we have taken a look back over the past 5 months and did indeed find some times that were obviously very wrong and have taken steps to amend the affected times and also to ensure that going forward these errors will not happen again.

Therefore once Richard gets some time he will update the main tables on the club website accordingly based on the investigations of the times since July. Whilst this does make some minor changes to the overall standings you will find that it doesn’t change anything at the top too much and still leaves the remaining months with everything to play for between those battling it out at the top of the table.

Therefore leading into the January handicap next week the amended top of the table looks something like:
